Late to the Party, and then some

World Party's "Goodbye Jumbo" is not part of my vinyl renaissance. Released in 1990, it was just at the point of the CD takeover. I never bought it on vinyl and I'm embarrassed to admit, not on CD either. But I always liked what I had heard.

I was looking through Amazon music the other day, and World Party come up ("because you listen to the Beatles"). I listened to 'Way Down Now," and it all came back to me. One thing led to another and I just had my fifth straight listen to "Jumbo."

At it's best, it's simply great, specifically tracks 2-7. The album as a whole suffers a bit from some fake drums and Karl Wallinger's Prince fixation is not his strong suit. But when feeds his Beatles muse, this music sparkles like little else from the end of pop/rock era.

Of course, this is an old guy talking who was reminded of wonderful music due to technology.

I remain a man lost in time, trying not to remain way down now.
