Hello Dolly

Re: Today's edition of the Best Song You've Never Heard Before

I had planned on lightening the mood with a break from the sadness of our heroes passing on with a shout-out to the one and only Dolly Parton on the occasion of her 70th birthday, which occurred a couple of days ago.

However, it didn't take me long to realize that said song wouldn't be elevating anyone's spirits.

But I'm going to post it anyway. This is devastating, and so far out-of-the-box for country music in 1969 that it's hard to describe.

Hell, this is startling not just for country music, but for any music, in any era. Dolly's songwriting is often overshadowed by her voice, presence and image, but her best work stands alongside just about anyone in the second half of the 20th century.

She was 23 years old when she wrote "Down to Dover."
