While boarding a plane last evening, I spoke briefly to a woman who was commuting between her residence in N.C. and a temporary job in Pa. She mentioned how she likes the job but misses her husband and the place she lives.
She nodded knowingly when I said, "a heart needs a home."
I'm reminded again of the power of the right song at the right moment. Even if I've heard the song dozens of times before, circumstances can cause me to hear it in a whole new light.
Filled with longing, want and desire, this is another Richard Thompson masterwork, with (now) ex-wife Linda's heart-wrenching vocals that wrap around the gorgeous and gentle melody with an aching despair.
In today's cacophonous world, it's a stellar example of great songwriting and a plaintive reminder that you don't need to scream to be heard.
And in the quiet, you can hear all that you need.
