I have a friend who says I am stuck in the past, that I don't like anything modern, specifically music. That my tastes stopped evolving perhaps in the early-to-mid '80s. That I don't give anything from this century a fair chance.
Guilty as charged, for the most part
Last night he suggested I watch Nine Inch Nail's opening song at this year's Lollapalooza, saying it was the best musical performance of 2013. And I did. It leaves me more than cold, but that opening really reminded me of something. I racked and racked my brain.
And then it came to me. Except that I enjoyed the Nerds more.
OK, that was a little harsh. And unfair. But it doesn't change the fact of how unenjoyable and unlistenable that is to me -- a lot of sound and fury signifying, well, you know.
And after all, we all know the best musical performance of this year was this.
But I am here to say that I have found something I like. Something from this century; in fact, from this year.
Something I adore.
Regan Lane, apparently doing business as Strangely Alright out of the Great Northwest, has crafted a dreamy slice of Beatles-like hooks, vocals and a melody that hits me right in the gut.

I love the sound, the message, the spirit, the attitude, the "come-on, come-ons," the psychedelic "Blue Jay Way"-ish bridge. Everything.
