There was nothing nobody could say

A co-worker sent me an e-mail yesterday saying that he heard it was Lee Michael's birthday. The only line in his message said, "Do you know what I mean."

Michaels is the performer of one of the great one-offs in rock history. "Do You Know What I Mean" is the story of a bewildered guy who has lost his girl to his best friend. He sounds goofy and stoned. He probably was. My old friend Mick Myers told me about this song when it came out in 1971, saying that it was great. He was right.

Anyway, after the e-mail, I looked up ol' Lee on the Internet to see what he was up to. The written lyrics were there and first line says "been 40 days since I don't know when." 40? For nearly 40 years I thought Lee was saying that it was 14 days.

Poor Lee didn't know when for even longer than I thought. I e-mailed my co-worker telling him this, and he agreed that it was a life-changing revelation. No wonder Lee is such a mess...

And, for the record, yes Lee, I do know what you mean.....
