If you are in my age group or older, most of your family photos are faded black and white snapshots – dull and mostly drab images that provide a physical and mental image of distant, long ago times.
Our photos are strictly black and white until the mid-60s. In those images, my parents (what few photos I have of them) certainly look so far removed from today's world that it's hard to fathom.
What I wouldn't give to have some images of them like these. The images are property of the Library of Congress and part of the exhibition "Bound for Glory: America in Color." What a glorious window into America's past. There is a vibrancy that jumps out in these photos; you can see hopeful, honorable and hardworking people, even if they there is often a hardscrabble look on ruddy faces, giving an indication of folks who are mired in the midst of the depression and living close to the land.
Obviously, nothing like this exists my photo album, but my family surely would have exhibited similar characteristics.
But this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the photos and memories that I do have – black and white, torn and frayed as they are.
