By all outward and inward appearances, my mom was very happy with my dad. I never saw an argument or heard raised voices. There was plenty of affection between them.
Yet, she apparently had a crush on another man.
The story goes that she named me after her favorite television personality. The great Dennis James (I have to claim a man great if I am his namesake) was a ubiquitous game show host from the 40s to the 70s, appearing on everything from "Name that Tune,""The (New) Price is Right," and even something called "Haggis Baggis."
However, many best remember him as a pitchman for Special K, but I've been unable to find a clip with the memorable "OK? OK!" tagline.
Interestingly, my mom supposedly also had a thing for the bookish, bespectacled Bill Cullen, so that could have been my name as well, I guess.
Better that than Wink Martindale.
