We interrupt this look back at the 70s to bring you a little story about the historical price of gasoline. Or petrol, as my dad used to call it.
I once asked him (this conversation probably did take place during the 70s when I was buying gas for the first time), "what is the cheapest price you can remember for a gallon of gas."
He said, not hesitating, "six gallons for a dollar."
This morning, I saw the photo at right on my Twitter feed. The year is 1939, which was the year my dad got his first car.
I think he also remembers the price because his parents had a general store with a Texaco gas pump in front. I am sure he pumped his share of Texaco petrol into area automobiles when growing up -- no self-serve in those days for sure.
That would have been too much monkey business back in the day when full service at the gas station was standard operating procedure.
