Hearts these days are cheap

When Any Trouble arrived with the New Wave at the tail end of the '70s, I knew bandleader Clive Gregson was onto something. Resembling Elvis Costello in looks as well as singing and songwriting chops, he traveled the hard luck in love road with tight 3-minute hook-drenched pop songs. The band's first album, "Where are all the Nice Girls," didn't make a dent in the charts, but it sure made its mark with me. Every song was instantly memorable, and long after the vinyl went out of print and it was released on CD, I kept these tunes in my head and heart.

Any Trouble soldiered on for several more quality records, before Gregson disbanded the group and teamed up with vocalist Christine Collister. Any Trouble reformed several years ago with mixed results, but early on, Gregson was spot on; one of most underrated of the New Wave songwriters/artists.

This installment of the The Best Song You've Never Heard is from the group's second album, and while the whole song is top notch, I especially love the layered, dense outtro, which goes on not nearly long enough with a joy and spirit that belies the implied heartache of the song's title.
