Eric Church – “Springsteen”
While I admire the theme and sentiment of this (besides, looking back at how music from the past is a touchstone in our lives and a central topic of my very own exercise here), overall, it leaves me a bit lukewarm.
The piano is referential to “Something in the Night” and the verses and a somewhat catchy chorus describe how Springsteen provided the soundtrack of a burgeoning relationship. But it loses steam just it’s all set up for the bridge or instrumental break. The payoff, the statement, never comes. It’s as if Church runs out of ideas, or just got lazy when he ran intro the break and fade.
“Hey, I’ll throw in a few whoa whoa whoa whoas that sound a little like the live version of ‘Badlands’ ….good enough!”
Still, I like the wordplay and especially the message that strikes a nerve with me: After all, every time I hear Steely Dan’s “Do it Again,” I am on my way in the wintertime of early 1973 to Muncy in my ’62 Tempest just to drive past her house....
...night after night....
