While driving in to school this morning, Ruby, Jack and I were listening to Richard Thompson’s Capitol Years collection.
One of my favorites, “I Feel So Good,” came on, and I was stunned when Jack, in full throat, came in hard on the lines: “I feel so good I want to break somebody’s heart tonight.”
Apparently, it's one of Jack's favorites too.
It took a moment, but I then started smiling from ear to ear. Not because he was singing these very grown-up lyrics, which are a bit abstract for a 7-year-old, but at the fact that Jack is starting to love the same music I do. When I was 7, I sure wasn’t singing along to Ernest Tubb’s “Walkin’ the Floor Over You” with my dad.
Ruby, of course, loves the Beatles, along with Richard Thompson's "Beeswing." And "Girls in Their Summer Clothes."
Amazing.
Great music, great kids.
