Lonesome Day

Pete Quaife died last week.

Who, you may ask?

Quaife, the original bassist for the Kinks and lower left in the photo, is responsible for the descending bass run that opens “Waterloo Sunset,” one of the most beautiful songs in all of recorded music.

And I would be remiss not to mention Quaife's passing, if only for the opportunity to talk about and post this tune.

"Waterloo Sunset" perfectly captures a feeling, a feeling born out of loneliness so powerful that you are almost paralyzed to do anything about it. But you are somehow content with this loneliness, painful and full of longing as it is, as long you can live vicariously through the lives of others.

And this contentedness becomes a way of life, and if you’re not careful, it can rob you of months, if not years, of living.

Another of our heroes is gone – one who played a major part in the Kinks’ greatest song; one who played a major part in what just might be anybody’s greatest song.
