"I blame it on Ed Sullivan"

That's a direct quote from my dad, circa 1966 or so. "It" was the social and maybe even political upheaval happening in the country: Hippies, drugs and loud rock and roll music.

My dad apparently thought if Ed Sullivan hadn't brought the Beatles to the U.S. in Feb. of '64, there would have been no long hair and no crazy music.

So obviously, he didn't have much time for The Beatles, or anything else they "brought" with them. Now, we may have bonded over many things, but this newfangled music was not one of them.

I thought of the connection between children, parents and the Beatles this morning when Ruby and I had our regular Sunday morning trip to Trader Joe's. "Breakfast with the Beatles" was on the car radio, and Ruby was listening intently. She heard "Octopus's Garden," "Yellow Submarine," and Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da," and was thrilled. And she thought the Beatles name was pretty great too. She likes bugs a lot.

Now, after today, she might tell you The Beatles are her favorite group, and even though she is only three, I couldn't be more proud. It's a remarkable feeling when your children, even at that very young and impressionable age, are just as excited as you are about something you love.

If I have to blame Ed Sullivan for that, so be it.
