Sister sledge


….sledge as in hammer.

This video is spectacular and intriguing at the same time. Because this performance is from around 1964, it isn’t the groundbreaking moment when gospel, r&b, blues and country came together to give birth to rock and roll. But given that she had already been doing this sort of thing for nearly thirty years, it’s clear that Sister Rosetta Tharpe was in the delivery room when the baby was born.

And how about the incidentals of the performance? Outside, in the rain, at a train station(?) in front of a bunch of white, pasty British kids.
