Hot Town, Summer in the City....

...or, when is a vacation not really a vacation?

This week, my family and I broke two cardinal vacation rules.

One, we went south in the summer. Never, ever do this, especially when your starting point is too hot to begin with. A stunningly foolish mistake.

Two, never expect a two-year-old to joyfully follow along with your carefree plans. It will not work. By law, it cannot work. Said two-year-old has her own schedule, which is counterintuitive to normal family outings while on vacation.

That is not to say no fun was had. Jack enjoyed some untethered fun with several neighboring campers, riding his bike and exploring the way kids did back in the day. Liz also liked bike riding with the kids and our pseudo camping in the "Kamping Lodge" (although she hopes the next trip into the wild will be pulling an Airstream). And Ruby especially liked the fake rat in a museum exhibit that showcased how man has destroyed our rural landscape with a bunch of urban nastiness.

I was positively giddy that the Lodge had air conditioning.

Next year will be better.

  1. Dennis - welcome to the joys of building your character through the many trials and tribulations of marriage and fatherhood! I wish you all the best as you savor each moment (or not). You are a damn fine writer. Who knew in 1974?
